10 Natural Remedies for Tooth Pain

Tooth pain is something everyone deals with at some point in their lives. Generally, it's caused by something minor, and it goes away within a few days. In these cases, a natural home remedy may work to help reduce the pain, swelling, inflammation and bacterial growth related to the toothache. This is great news if you don't like to take too much medication. And while each of these remedies may do the trick, if your toothache keeps up for more than two to three days, it's important to see a dentist to make sure there's not a major underlying problem.

Garlic

Several cultures have used garlic as both a pain reliever and bacteria killer for centuries, and it may help your toothache. If you can stomach it, try chewing on a garlic clove. Alternatively, crush the clove into a paste and spread it on the painful area.

Vanilla Extract

If you like to bake, you probably have some vanilla extract lying around. Put some on a cotton ball and apply it to the painful area a few times a day. The alcohol will help numb the pain, while the antioxidants in the vanilla will help get rid of what's causing it.

Salt Water

Sometimes, a simple salt water wash is all you need to remedy the pain. Mix about half a teaspoon into half a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for about 30 seconds. The salt will dislodge any food or other objects that could be causing the pain, and it can disinfect the area as well as reduce inflammation.

Peroxide

If you have peroxide around the house (and if you don't, you can get some for a couple of dollars at your local drug store), it could be the key to relieving your toothache. Just be careful not to swallow it. Mix equal parts peroxide and water together, and swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds like you would do with mouthwash. It can kill bacteria and even reduce the amount of plaque in your mouth in the process.

You may have used cucumbers on your eyes, but have you heard of using them to remedy a toothache? If not, it's pretty easy. Just cut the cucumber into small chunks and place it into the refrigerator or freezer until it's cold. Take it out, and put it in your mouth against the tooth. It can help reduce any inflammation.

One reason why the cold cucumber trick works is the cold itself. So, using an ice pack may work just as well. Hold it on the area for about 20 minutes a few times a day. The cold restricts the blood vessels and alleviates pain and swelling.

Next time you have tooth pain, try biting into a quarter of a lemon (a lime will work, too). While it may not exactly taste great, if the juices get into the infected area, the acid can help reduce the amount of bacteria that could be causing the pain.
